Roof leaking through the ceiling? What to do right now

Keep people away from wet wiring and any sagging ceiling, catch the water, move your things, and photograph everything. Stay off the roof. If a storm caused it, report it to your insurer, then have a roofer tarp it and inspect once it's dry.

A roof leak is rarely an emergency for the roof, but it can be one for the people and wiring under it. The first hour is about safety and limiting water damage inside. Finding and fixing the leak can wait for daylight and a roofer. Work through the steps below in order. None of them involves climbing on the roof, and none should.

Why the drip isn’t always under the hole

Water that gets past the roofing often runs along the decking, rafters or the top of the ceiling before it drips. The wet spot on your ceiling can be a few feet from where the water actually gets in. That’s why the notes you take now (when it leaks, in which rain, from which direction) save a roofer time later.

How fast do things need to dry?

The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to keep mold from growing. Once the dripping stops, open up the room, run fans or a dehumidifier if it’s safe to use power there, and pull wet rugs and boxes out. Soaked drywall or insulation that won’t dry may need to be cut out, which is a job for a restoration company or contractor.

What a leak repair usually costs in Austin

Our draft Austin estimates, dated October 1, 2026, put most leak repairs between $300 and $1,200, and other roof repairs between $450 and $3,500. These come from public cost guides, not quotes, and the roofer’s inspection is what sets the real price. Common questions

Is a roof leak an emergency?

It's urgent when water is near wiring, lights or the electrical panel, or when the ceiling is sagging. Then keep people away and deal with the power first. A slow drip into a bucket isn't an emergency for the roof itself; contain it, dry the room and get a roofer out in the next few days.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

If a storm caused the leak, report it to your insurer as soon as you can and ask what they need, then call a roofer for a tarp or temporary repair. If it's from age or wear, insurance usually won't cover the roof, so start with a roofer. Keep receipts for anything you spend to limit the damage.

Can I put a tarp on the roof myself?

It's safer not to. Roofs are slippery, especially wet, and falls are a serious risk. A roofer can tarp it properly, and your policy may pay for reasonable temporary repairs after a storm. Inside, buckets, towels and moving your things do most of the good.

Will a small roof leak cause mold?

It can if things stay wet. The EPA says drying water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours usually keeps mold from growing. Run fans or a dehumidifier once it's safe, pull out wet rugs and boxes, and have soaked drywall or insulation checked if it doesn't dry.
